About Wren

Wren, with son

Welcome to ISR Austin!

My name is Jennifer Wren Loomis. I am a certified Infant Swimming Resource Instructor and am also certified in Adult/Pediatric CPR and First Aid. My husband and I have been married for nine years and have a very active and curious two year old son.

When I first saw videos of young children demonstrating the swimming skills ISR teaches, I was convinced that I wanted this training for my son to help ensure his safety around water. To my surprise, I learned that there were no ISR Instructors in the Austin area. My mother, Robin Bates, became familiar with the program, and was inspired to leave her full time career to travel to Houston and become a certified Instructor. I accompanied her with my son to watch the last week of in-water training and was blown away by the range of children learning these valuable self-rescuing skills. I looked with teary eyes at my son, and knew that I wanted to help bring ISR to as many children as I possibly could. My son completed his ISR lessons when he was 20 months old in April 2008, taught by my mother. Watching him progress and learn how to save himself in the water inspired so much hope in me, and seeing him roll over to float and breathe for the first time on his own made me cry with joy. It was then that I knew I would become an ISR instructor, to bring this hope to as many families as I can.

My ISR certification training was completed November of 2008 and included 60+ hours of supervised in-water hands-on training with my Master Instructor and ISR students. My ISR education also included extensive academic study and testing in child psychology, physiology, and behavioral science. To continue as an ISR instructor I will be required to complete annual reviews and re-certification to ensure that my skills and techniques continue to meet the highest ISR standards. The role that theory and academics played in my training impressed me. I knew ISR was built on solid, scientific grounds, I just never imagined the breadth and extent to which individual instructors were required to study and educate themselves to become certified. This is a testament to the thoroughness of the program and its true prioritization of safety for the child.

I am passionate about working with children and love getting to know their families. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a young child in the water roll onto his/her back and take their first breath of air. I get tears in my eyes every time! Watching these young children learn valuable skills and develop confidence in themselves is very special and rewarding to me. This is more than my job, it’s my passion-- a passion to reduce the number of infant/toddler drownings in our community. I am honored that parents trust me with their children and enjoy watching little ones develop the skills and confidence they need to survive in and enjoy the water.

I encourage and welcome anyone to come observe lessons in progress! Introduce yourself to the parents at the pool and ask their experiences with the program. The parents are very friendly and are always happy to talk to other parents about the program.

My hope is to provide ISR to as many families as I can, as well as help educate our community on how life-threatening and unnecessary infant drowning is. I know you will enjoy your experience with ISR!

A quote from one of my recent swim parents: "Our instructor is a recent graduate of your certification program. She is incredibly patient, kind and the exact person I would want to teach my child. Wren Loomis made the trauma of first navigating swim lessons much easier to bear for my daughter and me."
